  4.     Debi Lane's nightmare began last November with a routine
  5. thyroid test. When she returned for the results the next day,
  6. doctors at the Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, Ariz., had
  7. chilling news. "There's been a terrible mistake," they told the
  8. 41-year-old mother of four. "Basically, we've killed your
  9. thyroid."

  11.     Instead of a small dose of mildly radioactive iodine, Lane
  12. had been treated with a megadose of radiation normally given to
  13. patients with thyroid cancer. She spent four days in a hospital
  14. isolation ward while her home was scrubbed down. Doctors say she
  15. has already contaminated her children.

  17.     Hospital officials insist that the misadministered dose was
  18. simply human error. They are seeking to have a $14,000 fine
  19. reduced or even dismissed. Lane, whose chances of developing
  20. cancer could increase more than 4% every year, is fearful about
  21. the future. "What if my health insurance gets canceled?" she
  22. asks. "What about [my children's] college? It looks like I'm
  23. not going to be here for them."
